abstract = {This dissertation is an examination of the life and times of James Henry Fleming (1872-1940). Fleming was an
amateur naturalist and native of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, who amassed one of the largest and most comprehensive ornithological collections in the world. The collection, which now resides in the Royal Ontario Museum as a bequest of Fleming, is comprised of over 30,000 study skins, 2,000 bound ornithological texts, 10,000 scientific papers and 50 years of ornithological correspondence. The life project of Fleming serves as the focal point for an interdisciplinary analysis of the changing epistemology of amateur natural history, contrasted with the growing professionalization of biological science. In particular, the hegemony of the latter in marginalizing the former, provides a framework for discussion. An examination of the history of natural history reveals the inherited traditions that made Fleming{\textquoteright}s project possible. In addition, the ideas of collecting as a component of natural history are considered. Finally, an attempt has been made to weave the animals themselves into the contexture of this work, since they are central to the focus of natural history. The resulting story reveals significant aspects of the changing nature of human relationships with wild, nonhuman animals.},
