June is a beautiful time of year to visit Prince Edward Island, and we have some information and recommendations for those participants arriving early, staying longer, or whose family may be touring the island during the week of the conference.
Downtown Charlottetown is an attractive historic centre with many excellent shopping and dining options. The conference begins with a reception and Professor Finis Dunaway’s keynote at the Confederation Centre of the Arts, but there is also a beautiful and very walk-able waterfront which participants can explore on their own time. The city has been stylized as “the birthplace of Confederation,” and it hosted the first meeting of the Fathers of Confederation in the 1864. One of the more significant sites is Province House where this meeting was held and where the provincial legislature continues today. Recommendations for accommodations in Charlottetown may be found here.
On Saturdays from 9-2, the farmers market just across the street from the university is a wonderful showcase of local produce, crafts and art. Along the north shore is the wonderful Prince Edward Island National Park. Entrance is free to visitors until June 18th for those wishing to explore the beaches and cliffs. One of the most popular tourist destinations in the north shore is the Cavendish resort area, home to several sites dedicated to Lucy Maude Montgomery and the landscapes depicted in her Anne of Green Gables.
For more information, please take a look at the PEI Visitors guide, or order your free print copy. For any particular questions related to the conference feel free to contact us at ispstaff@upei.ca
